Armena hopes to buck quiet bat trend

The league-leading offensive team in the PBL after two weeks is surprisingly the Armena Royals. Yes, the Armena Royals.

But the team isn’t getting too cocky yet.

“We did this last year,” said player-associate coach Clark Banack. “Put up big numbers early and then couldn’t score late in the season when we need it.

I have this weird feeling this year could be different.”

The team has thrown up an average of 9 runs per game. Some of that has to do with early-season rust Bardo and Holden showed on the defensive side of the ball.

However, the team has almost matched extra-base hit totals they met in the last two seasons with four doubles and two triples through four games.

Getting a couple bats back in the lineup such as Cole Tomaszeski, Adam Johnson and Chad Samoiseti helps. Ian Sherbaniuk and his brother Zenan have put the ball in play well, and veterans Clark Banack and Jason Buzzell are putting up typical output.

The real tests begin this week when teams’ defence improves, as well as their pitching.

Team totals at the quarter-poll:
Average: .344
On base %: .417
Runs: 36
Total Bases: 51
Walks: 13
