Angels squeak by Royals in pitcher’s duel

The Beaumont Angels played stellar defence and got solid pitching while stringing together a couple timely hits for a 2-1 squeaker Friday night in Beaumont over the Armena Royals.

The Royals continue to play lacklustre in Beaumont, and Friday night’s make-up chose to take aim at the offence. Despite putting the ball in play, the Royals could only muster one run off the bat of Cole Tomaszewski who notched a first-inning RBI enroute to a 2-3 night with surprising two stolen bases.

Tough luck struck the Royals pre-game when lead-off hitter and all-star Zenan Sherbaniuk had to go to the hospital to address a profuse bloody nose. The Royals were forced to start with eight and have Kenton White scramble in for a ninth after the unfortunate break just an hour or so before the make-up contest.

The rest of the Royals could only manage three hits, including a one-out double off the fence from starting pitcher Doug Morris in the top of the third. He was stranded though – one of six runners stranded in scoring position on the night on just three hits.

Doug Morris’ effort on the hill for Armena was spoiled in the sixth inning. After the Royals led after three and a half, Baeumont scored one in the fourth before using a one-out hit batsman and an RBI double to cash in the winning run.

The Royals now have a tough test next week in Bardo and then back home Thursday against the five-time defending champion Leduc Milleteers.
